Expat Guide to Caves of Drach

Formed during the Miocene epoch and sculpted by seawater infiltration through porous limestone, Cuevas del Drach consists of four massive interconnected chambers: the Black Cave, the White Cave, the Luis Salvador Cave, and the French Cave. The system is globally famous for housing Lake Martel, which is one of the largest underground lakes on the planet. The lake serves as a natural amphitheater for daily live classical music performance.

The Live Classical Quartet & Lake Martel

The walk is self-guided, but all visitors follow a single path that descends to the lake. At the end of the walk, you sit in a large amphitheater facing the water. The lights are dimmed, and a quartet (cello, harpsichord, and two violins) enters on illuminated rowboats, playing a 10-minute concert of works by Chopin and Caballero. This classical performance is a show you should listen to, as the acoustics inside the vaulted limestone chamber are exceptional.

Media Restrictions during Concert

All photography, video filming, and audio recording are strictly banned during the 10-minute classical string performance. Staff will monitor rows and ask violators to leave. Flash photography is prohibited throughout the entire cave system.

Insider Tips to Avoid the Crowds

User feedback indicates that the daily 12:00 and 14:00 timeslots attract the largest influx of organized coach tours. To avoid massive crowds and path bottlenecks, book either the first 10:00 tour or the final 17:00 tour. This allows you to explore the 1,200-meter pathway with minimal noise and fewer delays at the entry recepion.

At the end of the concert, a major point of congestion occurs: tourists queue up to board the short, 2-minute rowboat ride across Lake Martel. This queue regularly reaches 45 minutes. Informing visitors that they can bypass the boat queue entirely by utilizing the adjacent pedestrian footbridge allows them to exit the cave without delay, maximizing their schedule for nearby beaches like Cala Mendia.
